Christ Church, the mother church of Georgia, and St. John’s Church, a congregation dating to 1841, jointly announced today their affiliation with The Network of Anglican Communion Dioceses and Parishes, also known as the Anglican Communion Network. Both congregations are among the oldest and largest in the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia.
At the suggestion of the Archbishop of Canterbury, “The Network,” as it is popularly called, was established to help identify and solidify the witness of those Episcopalians in the United States and North America who affirm their theological and historical ties to the Anglican Communion and who repudiated last summer’s decision of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church, USA, to confirm the election of a non-celibate homosexual as a bishop in the Diocese of New Hampshire.
The Very Rev. Marcus B. Robertson, rector of Christ Church, understands Network affiliation as a positive step for his parish: “Our affiliation with the Network is an expression of our commitment to the centrality and authority of Holy Scripture and its unchangeable witness to Jesus Christ, which is a good and healthy step in today’s uncertain and frightened world.”
The Rev. Dr. Michael L. Carreker, rector of St. John’s, sees his congregation’s involvement similarly: “Our vestry voted unanimously to join the Anglican Communion Network for three reasons: a) its adherence to the supremacy of Holy Scripture in all matters of faith and moral life; b) its affirmation of the Creeds and the Historic Formularies of the Anglican Way; and c) its wholehearted support of the integrity of the worldwide Anglican Communion.”
